Ex-commander of US forces in Vietnam dies at 91

General William Westmoreland, the highly decorated former commander of US forces in Vietnam whose name became synonymous with the US military debacle in Southeast Asia, has died at a retirement home in Charleston, South Carolina. He was 91.

 

Westmoreland, a veteran of three wars and recipient of three dozen military decorations during his career, commanded US forces in Vietnam from 1964-68.
