European Parliament calls Hizbullah ”terrorist group” as US shifts policy

The European Parliament (EP) on Thursday described Lebanese Hizbullah movement as a "terrorist group" and asked the European Union (EU) to take preventive measures against it. An EP General Council meeting overwhelmingly approved a decision on the subject and noted "clear evidence" of Hizbullah's activities.

Meanwhile, after years of campaigning against Lebanon's Hizbullah as a "terrorist pariah," the US administration is going along with efforts by France and the United Nations to steer the movement into the Lebanese political mainstream, administration officials were on Thursday quoted as saying.

The administration's shift was described by American, European and United Nations officials as a reluctant recognition that Hizbullah, besides having an armed arm, is an important political factor in Lebanon that could block Western efforts to get Syria to withdraw its troops, the New York Times said.
