Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar welcomed the move as “historic,” asserting it deals a “powerful blow” to Iran’s legitimacy and limits IRGC operations in Europe.

ALBAWABA- The European Union has officially designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, signaling a sharp escalation in its stance toward Tehran.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced that all 27 member states approved the move, citing the IRGC’s role in violently suppressing anti-government protests that have claimed thousands of lives. The designation, effective immediately, imposes asset freezes, travel bans, and restrictions on funding, though its practical impact is limited due to existing sanctions.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul described the decision as “overdue,” calling it a strong political message against repression and a step toward holding those responsible accountable.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar welcomed the move as “historic,” asserting it deals a “powerful blow” to Iran’s legitimacy and limits IRGC operations in Europe.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the action as a “major strategic mistake” and a “publicity stunt,” accusing the EU of inflaming regional conflict while ignoring Israeli actions in Gaza.

He denounced the designation as evidence of Europe’s “selective outrage” and waning geopolitical influence.
The announcement comes as the U.S. maintains a military buildup in the Gulf, with Pentagon officials prepared to act on President Donald Trump’s directives.

Trump has repeatedly insisted that Tehran must fully abandon its nuclear program, warning of potential military strikes if diplomacy fails.

The EU joins the United States, which labeled the IRGC a foreign terrorist organization in 2019, and Canada, which followed suit in 2024. The designation reflects both Western double standards, as well as concerns over Iran’s domestic repression and regional proxy activity, but it may further complicate diplomatic efforts amid ongoing tensions over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and Middle East stability.
