The European Union's envoy to the Middle East, Marc Otte on Tuesday called on parties in the Middle East to use moderation to reduce tension created by the Israeli raid against Syria.
"It is not useful to take action to heighten tensions. Everything must be done to reduce tension," Otte told reporters following talks with Arab League Secretary General Amr Mussa.
"We are urging all parties concerned to act with moderation and respect for international law," he added.
Otte, who also met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher, said he had discussed in Cairo the "escalation of the violence in the Middle East, which is everyone's preoccupation."
When asked to comment on the recent Israeli air-raid in Syria, Otte said "we (the EU) are fully engaged in the fight against terrorism but within the framework of the UN."
Meanwhile, Otte said that the EU "will continue to work on the roadmap" for peace.
On the new Palestinian cabinet, Otte said the EU would "judge the new Palestinian government by its deeds." (Albawaba.com)
