The Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) has won the award for Outstanding Contribution to Regional Maritime Services at the 2nd annual Dubai International Maritime Awards.
The Dubai International Maritime Awards is one of the most prestigious awards of its kind in the region, and seeks to acknowledge organizations and individuals for their efforts to improve maritime standards in West and Central Asia.
The Outstanding Contribution to Regional Maritime Services Award was received by Ahmed A. Hussain, CEO, EHS, in the presence of Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary-General, International Maritime Organization (IMO), at a gala dinner held at the Grand Hyatt, Dubai recently.
“We are glad to receive this prestigious award. The award acknowledges EHS’ contribution towards the upkeep of quality at the Dubai Ports and to the development of the larger maritime sector,” said Ahmed Abdul Hussain. “Dubai Ports has today evolved into one of the busiest ports in the world, with vessels from all major international routes calling at the port. EHS plays a significant role in ensuring that all port facilities are maintained and operated in accordance with the most stringent quality standards.”
“EHS provides a broad spectrum of services from hazardous waste management and cleaning services to ship safety inspection and spill contingency services, ensuring that all activities match the prescribed standards. Our services result in direct benefits to the maritime industry in terms of saving of cost as well as time. The EHS Services Control Center operates 24 hours a day, allowing us to offer all services on time and without delay,” Hussain added.
EHS’ fumigation services enable shipping agents to protect their cargo from pest infestation and to comply with the statutory requirements of the importing country. EHS has also taken stringent measures to minimize and recycle the waste generated in the port. All wastes and rejected cargo are assessed for reuse possibilities before disposal, contributing towards resource saving and environment protection.
Formerly a Division of Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), EHS was recently restructured to become a full-fledged Business Unit, in view of the widening scope of it’s activities. EHS’ strict enforcement of environmental standards across all PCFC divisions and other Business Units, such as Nakheel, had enabled the Corporation to achieve recertification of ISO 14001, the international standard for Environmental Management System (EMS).
