More than 6,000 young Emirati men and women have undergone pre-marital medical check-ups in the past six months, a prerequisite to qualify for the Dh70,000 ($19,000) grant provided by the Marriage Fund.

Speaking to Gulf News on Friday, fund director Jamal Al Bah said that the UAE community was showing greater acceptance of medical check-ups before marriage.

"Most national families were sensitive about this issue. Some felt it was embarrassing to ask the groom or the bride to have a medical test before marriage. But the situation has now changed. More people are now convinced of the need for such check-ups, thanks to the fund's continuous public awareness campaigns," Bah said – Albawaba.com
