One way to settle the dispute between the UAE and Iran over three islands would be a UN Security Council resolution forcing Iran to go to the International Court of Justice, said Ras Al-Khaima Crown Prince Sheikh Khalid Al Qasimi.
“If the Security Council issued such a resolution, Iran would have to send a representative to the international court and present documents of proof, so that in the end all parties would obtain their rights,” Sheikh Khaled said.
“Iran should take into consideration the recent resolution of a territorial dispute between Bahrain and Qatar at the International Court of Justice and use that as a precedent.”
The official added that "Iran is interested in occupying the islands of Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Mousa because of their geographic and strategic location.
“Iran is obsessed with power, but every country should realize there is no room for power in a world that is only a small village and whose different parts are closely interconnected, he said.
On Saturday, UAE’s ambassador to Iran was summoned to the foreign ministry and given a formal protest over Abu Dhabi's claims on the three islands.
Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi rejected the Amman Arab summit's support for the UAE claim and reaffirmed Tehran's "eternal sovereignty" over the islands.
"The section in the Arab League's final communiqué on the islands is biased and partisan," Asefi said, affirming that the isles "have always been Iranian and will always be an integral part of Iranian territory and sovereignty."
Both Iran and the UAE have said they will never retract their claims to the strategic islands, which Iran has held since 1971 when Britain pulled out of the region – Albawaba.com
