A car bomb hit the Iraqi justice minister's convoy as it moved through western Baghdad on Saturday. Malik Dohan al-Hassan was not injured but five bodyguards were killed.
The attack took place at an intersection not far from al Hassan's home.
One of the minister's bodyguards, Loae Hassan, said that five members of the minister's security team were killed in the explosion that completely destroyed three vehicles in the convoy.
At nearly the same time, a car bomb went off outside an Iraqi National Guard headquarters in Mahmudiyah, some 30 kilometers south of Baghdad. Two people were killed and 47 injured, hospital officials said.
The explosion occurred as prospective recruits were waiting to get into the headquarters, said Dr. Dawoud Jassim Taie, director of the Mahmudiyah Hospital. According to The AP, six of the wounded were National Guard troops while the rest were prospective recruits, he said.
Elsewhere, a roadside bomb hit a U.S. convoy Saturday, killing one U.S. soldier and injuring another, the U.S. military said. The attack took place near Beiji, some 140 kilometers south of the northern city of Mosul. (albawaba.com)
