Dozens of Egyptian political activists marched on Tuesday to the offices of the Arab League on the 53rd anniversary of Nakba, marking the most sentimental occasion in modern Arab history: the loss of Palestine and the creation of Israel.
The marchers, angered by the bloodshed in the Palestinian lands, chanted slogans against the Israeli occupation and the “slackness of the Arab regimes.”
Leftists and Islamists, who carried Palestinian flags, attacked Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, accusing him of “selling Al Aqsa Mosque.”
The protestors were planning to deliver a message to the Arab League, but instead, they slammed the institution, chanting against its failure to assume its role in defending the Palestinians.
No clashes with the security forces packing the area were witnessed, but the Egyptian police was not spared hostile verbal attacks before the rally ended peacefully.
The activities planned by the professional associations and opposition parties will continue Wednesday with a forum on the Palestinian Cause at the Writers Association and a conference organized by the Bar Association.
