Egypt’s trade unions are gearing up to choose candidates for committee-level elections in October, according to the daily Al Ahram.

Nominations for races in 4,000 committees nationwide will take place September 23-25, in the lead-up to the October 8-27 polls.

Seats on 100 new committees created during the past period will be at stake in the upcoming elections, which will determine leadership in the period 2001-2006.

“In two days, the Higher Oversight Committee will wrap up the legislative candidacy procedures,” said the head of the Egyptian Trade Union Confederation, Al Sayyed Rashed. “The trade union general elections will begin with nominations for trade union board membership on October 29 and 30, with the elections to be run on November 11 and 12.”

Rashed added that any worker could run in the elections, provided that he or she satisfied the requirements under the Egyptian Trade Unions Law and its amendments.

The trade union head called upon all candidates to abide by the basic rules – including, for example, membership in a trade union – Albawaba.com
