The chief of the Egyptian television news department, Mohammed al-Wakil, has been sent for trial accused of accepting a bribe to put a doctor on his chat show, chief prosecutor Mahed Abdel Wahed said on Wednesday.
Besides Wakil, three other men were also remanded to the state security court, including Dr. Fakher Fuad Guendi, producer Ahmed al-Hassissi and television staffer Hani Abdel Latif, Wahed said during a press conference, according to AFP.
Guendi allegedly gave 10,000 Egyptian pounds (2,000 dollars) to Hassissi and Latif and asked them to pass it on to Wakil to invite the doctor to appear on the "Hello Egypt" show, allowing him to publicize his clinic.
Wakil was detained on July 7 in his office by officials of the body in charge of monitoring state employees, as Hassissi was handing him the money. Hassissi, who is also a professor at the Suez Canal University and Abdel Latif were arrested along with Wakil. Guendi, accused of corrupting a state employee, was freed after a police interrogation.
