The Egyptian Telecom Co. is gearing up to launch phone cards, dubbed Marhaba (Hello) cards, which are expected to hit the market nationwide in the next two months, the daily Al Ahram reported Monday.

The company aims at enabling its subscribers to make all their local, national, international and mobile calls through these cards.

The service will help the public control their telephone bills by deducting the charges directly from the card’s value, particularly in view of the fact that these cards will be cheaper than ordinary phone calls.

The daily cited the chairman of the Egyptian Telecom, Aqil Bashir, as saying, “this card operates through the smart network (IN).”

“The smart network will be divided into two areas: one to include Cairo, Kibli and Suez canal cities, which has actually been completed, and currently is being expanded to increase its capacity to a million cards for subscribers from the area.

“The second one will include Alexandria, Northern Coast and Bahri and will have the capacity for one million cards as well. The smart network is currently being completed in Bahri areas and will be completely wrapped up in Dimiat, Sharkiyyah, Gharbiyyah and Dakahliyyah by the end of this month.”

The cards, which have been released in the markets of areas where the network has been completed, such as Kafr Al Sheikh, Al Behairah and Kalyoubiyyah, come in 15, 30, 50 and 100-pound values - Albawaba.com
