The suspected mastermind of a series of bombing attacks targeting foreign tourists in Egypt died in custody earlier this week, Attorney General Maher Abdul Wahid disclosed on Saturday.
Ashraf Said Yusef died in hospital on Thursday from "self-inflicted injuries", Abdul Wahid insisted, according to AFP. Police had informed prosecutors on May 11 that their prisoner had become "very agitated and deliberately hit his head on the wall of his cell," prompting his transfer to hospital, the attorney general conveyed.
Yusef was suspected of masterminding an attack on a Cairo bazaar in early April. This was followed by two further bombings at major tourist sites.
