Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday met with Secretary for African Unity Ali Abdel Salam Triki of Libya's General People's Committee (cabinet) on the Sudan issue, Egypt's official MENA news agency said.
During the meeting, which was held at Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, Mubarak and Triki discussed means of activating an Egyptian-Libyan initiative on reaching a peaceful settlement in Sudan.
In addition, Mubarak received a message from Libyan leader Muammar Ghaddafi on ways of boosting bilateral cooperation and the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Last year, Egypt and Libya put forward a new reconciliation plan for Sudan, which called for resuming the peace process, forming a transitional cabinet of all political forces, specifying the date and arrangements of new general elections, and an immediate cessation of all forms of hostilities.
Last month, Mubarak told a visiting senior official of Sudan's ruling National Congress Party that Egypt is committed to peace and reconciliation in Sudan.
The Sudanese Islamic government forces have been fighting with southern rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army, which has been struggling for greater autonomy for the predominantly Christian and animist south since 1983. (Albawaba.com)
