Egypt’s bickering opposition parties put aside their differences on Monday to attend a conference in solidarity with the Palestinians and Lebanese, where they denounced Israel’s escalation of violence in the Occupied Territories and air attacks on Syrian targets in Lebanon.
Among the speakers at the conference, which was hosted by the leftist Assembly Party and attended by dozens of Egyptian opposition activists, was Assembly Party chief Khaled Mohiddin; Noman Jumaah, head of the Wafd Party; and Diaddin Daoud, chief of the Nasserist Party. Also present was Ibrahim Shukri, head of the Labor Party, which the government has temporarily barred from operating.
All of the speakers reiterated the importance of supporting the Palestinian Intifada by all possible means, calling on the Egyptian government to take decisive action against the Israelis. As it wrapped up, the conference made many recommendations, the most important of which was its demand for a halt to all kinds of normalization with the Zionists, particularly in the field of agriculture.
The conference was the first of its kind, and the first such event in a long time to witness a meeting of Wafd and Assembly party leaders. The two sides have been blasting each other in the press over the past few months.
The sniping became more intense after the Wafd Party insisted on excluding from parliament an Assembly candidate, who ran in the recent parliamentary elections against Mohiddin in his hometown of Kufor Shukr.
Wafd leaders accused the candidate of seeking government help to win the elections through fraud. This accusation provoked a bitter response from the Assembly party newspaper, Al Ahali – Albawaba.com
