The Egyptian government has decided that all ministries, official bodies, and companies affiliated to the public enterprise sector, must use the services of the Egyptian commercial fleet to import logistics and export goods, reported the Egyptian Gazette on Friday.
The new regulations, introduced by the Maritime Transport Department, were designed in response to Prime Minister Atef Ebeid's orders to use the fleet for the benefit of the national economy, said the paper.
According to head of the Department Mohsen Al Masri, a committee has been formed to review the exceptional cases when an official body is authorized to transport its imports on non-Egyptian ships.
The exceptions include cases when the transported materials require special facilities that the Egyptian fleet cannot provide.
The committee, which is chaired by Al Masri, and is expected to meet weekly, consists of representatives of private and public sector navigational companies – Albawaba.com
