Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher on Sunday underlined the need to send international observers to the occupied Palestinian territories “regardless of their nationalities,” to monitor Israeli practices and help deter aggression, reported the official Kuwaiti news agency, KUNA.
Maher told reporters that the nationality of the observers was not the important point.
Rather, he said it was important not to let Israel decide when to start implementation of the Mitchell report’s recommendations.
He added that the final communiqué of the Genoa G8 summit contained many positive points.
Under mounting international pressure, Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer has said his country would accept the deployment of international monitors provided they were of US nationality.
Palestinian officials have been clamoring for observers for several months, saying the international presence would protect civilians and reveal, once and for all, the instigators of the area's so-called "cycle of violence" – Albawaba.com
