Egypt's permanent delegate to the UN, Ahmed Abul Gheit, has said that Africa has the right to two permanent seats on the UN Security Council (UNSC).

“Egypt has stressed, during the current negotiations on enlarging the membership of the UNSC, the necessity of dedicating two permanent seats in addition to three non-permanent [ones] to Africa,” he said, quoted as saying by Egypt Online.

The UN ambassador added that there were European and Asian countries that were also seeking a permanent seat, including Germany and Japan.

But "Japan has realized the difficulty of such demand due to radical conflicts among states in this regard,” he said, according to Egypt Online.

The UNSC has 15 members. Five are permanent members, and 10 are elected by the UN General Assembly for two-year terms.

The five permanent members are the US, China, Russia, Britain and France – Albawaba.com
