Egypt on Thursday will officially take the helm of the Union of Arab Chambers of Commerce and Industry, marking the beginning of a two-year term, according to the daily Al Ahram.
This will be the first time Egypt has held the presidency of the key union, which is considered the only body representing Arab businessmen.
The union counts 21 Arab countries as members, said the Cairo-based paper.
The new head of the union, the president of the Egyptian Chambers of Commerce, Khaled Abu Ismail, told the paper that he had wrapped up a strategic plan to develop the organization based on the support of Arab countries in their efforts to restructure their economies.
“This strategy has many objectives, including the reactivation of the role of the Arab Chambers of Commerce through direct influence on the economic policy aiming at economic reform and remedying the structural defects which some Arab economies are suffering from,” Abu Ismail added - Albawaba.com
