Egyptian Minister of Social Affairs Aminah Al Gondi on Tuesday honored “ideal parents” nationwide by presenting a number of them with visas to make the umra, or minor pilgrimage, to Mecca.

According to the daily Al Akhbar, the minister reiterated during the awards ceremony the importance of the positive role that the family plays in achieving social stability and protecting against alienation.

“Ideal mothers” in both the armed forces and police were also honored as a way of celebrating Mother’s Day.

“The Zakat Lovers Society has come up with this initiative in appreciation of what mothers and fathers have done. These parents have been given plane tickets and residency vouchers to enable them perform Umra this week at the expense of society,” he added.

The ceremony coincided with celebrations of what Egyptians call the “October victory” over Israel in the 1973 Mideast war – Albawaba.com
