Officials from the Pentagon say Egypt is considering plans to order an upgrade of its arsenal of howitzers.

The proposed project, which would cost $77 million, would upgrade all 201 systems, said the Middle East Newsline (MENL).

The M-109 was one of the first US systems delivered to Egypt after the peace treaty with Israel in 1979.

The systems, with a range of 21 kilometers, were deployed in 1984.

According to the agency, the Bush administration has approved the Egyptian request and notified Congress of a possible sale – Albawaba.com
