Egypt’s refusal to revoke the membership of the US Congress in the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) has led to the withdrawal of a draft resolution on the subject prepared by several European countries, according to the daily Al Gomhuria on Tuesday.
Earlier, the European states came up with the draft, which calls for dismissing the US from the IPU because of the US failure to fulfill its financial commitments.
Egyptian Parliament Speaker Ahmed Fathi Srour said that the Egyptian delegation to the IPU’s Burkina Faso conference had rejected the proposal because it contradicted the union’s principles, and due to the fact that the US Congress constituted an important parliamentary establishment needed to enhance and develop the union - Albawaba.com
