Egyptian police detained a man suspected of killing an Israeli citizen in a Sinai resort last week, in what is being considered a criminal rather than a political case, the interior ministry said.

The suspect, Ahmed Abdel Khaleq al-Sayyed, who worked at a tourist resort near Nuweiba, "was arrested and admits having stabbed a foreigner, whose nationality he did not know, during an argument," the ministry said. Al-Sayed said he did not know the Israeli was dead when he walked away from the scene, according to police.

The suspect, who was previously jailed for three years for a drug offense, reportedly told police he was fishing by the sea when a foreigner he did not know approached him to buy fish.

The two then smoked marijuana before an argument erupted and the Egyptian stabbed the foreigner with a fish knife, according to the police, quoting testimony given by the suspect. (Albawaba.com)
