Kuwaiti Defense Minister Jaber al-Mubarak al-Sabah held talks in Cairo Tuesday with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak at the beginning of a visit focused on military cooperation, sources close to Mubarak said. Egyptian Defense Minister Hussein Tantawi participated in the talks at the presidential palace in northern Cairo, the sources said without providing further details.
Sabah and Tantawi met later and "exchanged views on the situation in the region and the peace process under the shadow of circumstances and challenges confronting the Middle East and harming its security, stability and the peace of its people," Egyptian news agency MENA said.
MENA appeared to be alluding not only to the Palestinian-Israeli violence but also a growing debate over possible US military action against Iraq aimed at toppling President Saddam Hussein. Moreover, Sabah and Tantawi studied "ways to consolidate military cooperation between Egypt and Kuwait," MENA added.
"The visit comes in the context of Egypt's and Kuwait's concern to open new horizons of cooperation between the armed forces of both countries," the agency reported. The Egyptian chief of staff, Hamdi Weheiba, as well as Sabah's delegation attended the talks between the two ministers, MENA reported.
The Kuwaiti minister arrived in the Egyptian capital Monday evening for a visit of "several days," the agency said. (Albawaba.com)
