An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale jolted central Taiwan Friday but no casualties or damage were reported, the Central Weather Bureau said.

The quake struck at 7:22 PM (1122 GMT) with its epicenter 17.0 kilometers (10.5 miles) southwest of Hohuanshan. It originated 3.0 kilometers under the earth's surface.

Minor tremors and aftershocks have been a daily occurrence after the island was hit by a devastating earthquake on September 21 last year.

The fatal tremor measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale was the biggest to shake the island in a century.

On June 11, a quake with a magnitude of 6.7 hit central Taiwan, killing two people and injuring 36 -- TAIPEI (AFP)
