Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has approved a law making the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Center at Dubai Municipality the only official source for collecting basic and detailed information and data.
According to article 2 of the law, the GIS Center will be responsible for protecting, retaining and classifying data and information, by means of mutual agreement and cooperation between the center and these bodies, Khaleej Times reported Wednesday.The data provided by the center include digital and descriptive information such as: aerial photographs, satellite pictures, three dimensional digital models, topographic and geodesic data, civic planning data, building legislation, information on addresses, road networks, drainage and irrigation network, electricity and water connections, telephone lines and other public services and utilities, said the paper.
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is defined by experts as an information system that is designed to work with data referenced by spatial or geographic coordinates. It is is both a database system with specific capabilities for spatially-referenced data, as well as a set of operations for working [analysis] with the
data.
