Corrupt prison guards are allegedly involved in supplying hard drugs including cocaine and heroin to prisoners at Dubai Central Jail, according to Gulf News, quoting prison officials.

The prison's director, Maj. Abdullah Al Saeed, said a major crackdown has been launched to stamp out the racket which involves guards collecting drugs from suppliers outside for delivery to inmates.

"The supply of drugs inside the jail happens through the people policing the prisoners," he said. "We have guards of different nationalities and varying economic backgrounds. They are quite well paid, many times more than what they would earn in their own country, but after a while some become greedy.

"They become addicted to a certain lifestyle: they want to visit nightclubs, rent expensive cars and become involved in activities that require them to make more money. "These people act as contacts between prisoners and the people on the outside who supply them with drugs. A prisoner will tell a guard to meet his brother and bring him a few grams of cocaine. The guard will then charge about Dh5,000 for the service,” the officer said – Albawaba.com
