Dubai International Airport announced Saturday that it will introduce a new service, providing all flight information through cellular phones starting from January 2002.

The new service will enable the people to get up-to-the-minute information on flights, from the time they are airborne to the time they land, as well as on delays and cancellations.

Mohammad Ahli, senior official at Dubai civil aviation department, said that the service would be provided through Etisalat's short messaging system (SMS), at the price of a telephone call or less.

The service is currently in a trial period and will soon be finalized, Ahali added.

He was quoted by the Dubai-based Khaleej Times as saying that “we are introducing this service based on customer surveys, and this is a natural progression into technology."

He said very often people get tired of calling flight information by telephone and having to wait for an operator to answer - this will be a touch dialling and provide information at the customer's fingertips. It is also expected to help tour operators and hotels who expect large contingents of visitors on a daily basis – Albawaba.com
