ALBAWABA - In New York, a general in Iran's Revolutionary Guards has been charged with plotting the murder of an Iranian American journalist who was voicing her opposition to the Iranian regime.

Eight people have been charged "for their efforts to silence and kill a US citizen because of her criticism of the Iranian regime," according to the Justice Department.

Unsealed court records did not identify the target of the alleged assassination plan, although it has been widely assumed that she is Masih Alinejad.

While the Iranian government made no immediate statement on the recent developments in the Alinejad investigation, it has previously dismissed similar US claims regarding purported conspiracies to attack US diplomats or lawmakers.

Alinejad tweeted about the allegations on her X account, stating the claimed conspiracy to assassinate her was a "stark reminder of the brutal lengths to which the Islamic regime will go to silence dissidents, even those far beyond Iran's borders".

The US Attorney General, Merrick Garland, stated: "The justice department has now charged eight individuals, including an Iranian military official, for their efforts to silence and kill a US citizen because of her criticism of the Iranian regime,".

Garland added that the Department of Justice "will not tolerate efforts by an authoritarian regime like Iran to undermine the fundamental rights guaranteed to every American,".
