Mohammed Saila, the Algerian national arrested early last month at the Banjul Ferry Terminal and detained at the Banjul Police Station, has embarked on a hunger strike to protest his continued detention, said the Daily Observer Thursday.
Saila, who has been placed under maximum-security detention, is refusing his daily police-provided meals. The accused Islamic extremist is supposedly in custody to help the police determine the motive for his alleged routine movement from North to West Africa.
The police spokesman, Sub-inspector Aziz Bojang, was not available for comment, and insiders at the police headquarters would not talk about the matter, said the daily.
Speaking to the paper about Saila's arrest last week, PRO Bojang said the Algerian had disclosed that he was a retired Islamic extremist who had come to settle in Gambia because he thought it was a peaceful country – Albawaba.com
