The death toll in the suicide attack by Islamic militants on the legislature building in Indian Kashmir has gone up by four to 38, police said Tuesday.

Two of those injured in Monday's attack -- the worst violence in Indian-administered Kashmir since last month's terrorist strikes on the United States -- succumbed to their injuries in hospital, a police spokesman said.

Two more bodies were pulled out of the rubble early Tuesday, the spokesman said.

Police said 60 people were in hospital with injuries and 10 of them were listed in serious condition.

A militant of the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed Islamic group drove a car packed with explosives to the tightly guarded Kashmir legislature building and set off a massive blast.

The explosion damaged at least 150 buildings and street stalls including a six-story hotel.

Within minutes of the blast militants stormed the legislature complex, setting off a gun battle until Indian troops shot them dead -- SRINAGAR, India (AFP)
