A top Daesh commander known as "Omar the Chechen" died from his injuries following U.S.-led coalition airstrike in northeastern Syria, the Pentagon announced Monday.

"We believe he subsequently died of his injuries," Navy Captain Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, told Agence France Presse.

The announcement confirmed the fate of the infamous Omar al-Shishani, a week after a U.S. official reported the Daesh commander had been targeted in a March 4 strike on his convoy.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated on Sunday Shishani had been "clinically dead" for several days.

Shishani, originally named Tarkhan Batirashvili, had a  $5 million bounty on his head as he was one of the most wanted Daesh leaders by Washington.
