Indian officials imposed an indefinite curfew Tuesday on the southern Kashmir town of Kishtwar after a fire at a major mosque sparked violent Muslim protests.
The protests took place late Monday after the grand mosque of Kishtiwar, the Jamia Masjid, was completely gutted in a fire, which officials insist was caused by a short circuit.
The protestors and authorities have accused each other of preventing fire trucks reaching the mosque in time.
Muslim demonstrators shouted anti-government slogans and damaged some vehicles and shops belonging to the majority Hindu community.
The violence prompted authorities to impose a curfew and bring in security reinforcements to restore calm in the town -- SRINAGAR (AFP)
