US President Bill Clinton telephoned Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Friday to discuss Israeli and Palestinian reactions to his peace proposals, Egypt's state-owned MENA news agency reported overnight.

Their conversation covered "the positions of the Palestinian and Israeli sides regarding the American proposals," MENA said without giving details.

Mubarak then telephoned Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat Friday evening to "exchange views" on the US proposals, the agency reported.

An Israeli-Palestinian summit planned for Thursday in Egypt was called off due to differences over the proposals, which would reportedly give the Palestinians back nearly all their Israeli-occupied lands including parts of east Jerusalem but no right for refugees to return to their homes in Israel -- CAIRO (AFP)
