The Chinese ambassador to Beirut, Liu Zhen Tang, was summoned to the foreign ministry on Thursday for details on a post-game fight between Lebanese and Chinese players at the Asian Basketball Championship in Shanghai, reported the Daily Star newspaper on Friday.
The ambassador told Gibran Soufan, the ministry’s director for international affairs, that Chinese officials were still investigating the incident, which left four Lebanese players with minor injuries.
He said it was not in either country’s interest to dwell on the episode, promising it would be “dealt with quietly.”
“We are sorry for what happened because of a sudden loss of control or emotion. The incident had no great significance,” he added.
On Tuesday, one day after the fight following Lebanon’s loss to China, both teams were apologetic.
