Canada on Tuesday dismissed growing criticism about its pro-Israel stance, saying the Hizbullah was "a cancer" that could well break the terms of any future cease-fire.
However, Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay also for the first time indirectly criticized Israel, saying its decision to bomb Beirut airport had complicated the task of evacuating thousands of Canadians.
MacKay, summoned to a special session of Parliament's foreign affairs committee to discuss the crisis, stated Lebanon was being held hostage by Hizbullah. "There can be no doubt about that -- Hizbullah are a cancer on Lebanon that are destroying stability and democracy," he said, according to Reuters.
"We are dealing with terrorists. We're not sure who speaks for Hizbullah or whether they would even begin to keep their word in a cease-fire," added MacKay.
