Former US presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush arrived in the tsunami-hit Indonesian province of Aceh to see first-hand the immense devastation caused by December's disaster.

The two earlier visited Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province, where they held brief talks with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono before travelling to neighbouring Aceh, which bore the brunt of the devastation.

They were to inspect the damage and visit refugee camps in the provincial capital Banda Aceh and a mosque in nearby Ulee Lheu, US officials said.

Yudhoyono said he and the two former presidents discussed the needs for rebuilding the battered region. "I explained to them about the situation in Aceh, the emergency relief activities, and the reconstruction plan and what activities can be undertaken by international parties, including the United States," he told journalists.

"Both former president Bush and former president Clinton expressed that the people of America are interested in assisting and contributing to their brothers in the disaster-affected areas."

The two former US leaders were expected to fly to Sri Lanka and the Maldives later Sunday for the last part of the tour.
