President George Bush said Wednesday Saddam Hussein's regime has "passed into history" and called on the UN to lift economic sanctions against Iraq.
Bush declared the military mission a success. He was speaking at the Boeing factory in St. Louis, Missouri that makes the F/A-18 fighter jets which flew missions during the war. "We were successful in making the world a more peaceful place," he said.
"Thanks to the courage and might of our military, the American people are now secure," he said. "Thanks to the courage and might of our military, the Iraqi people are now free."
Meanwhile, General Tommy Franks, commander of the U.S. forces that overthrew Saddam Hussein, visited Baghdad on Wednesday, a spokesman at his Central Command war headquarters in Qatar said.
"General Franks is in Baghdad," the spokesman told reporters, giving no details. Franks had said that, with the war effectively over, he would visit commanders in the Iraqi capital. (Albawaba.com)
