US President George Bush has appointed a leading strategist as his adviser on Gulf issues, reported the Middle East Newsline on Sunday.

The report said that Zalmay Khalilzad had been named special assistant Bush.

Khalilzad, an Afghani-American, is regarded as one of the top strategists in the United States and an expert on Middle East and defense issues.

He was director of the Rand Corporation's strategy, doctrine and force structure program conducted for the US Air Force, said the report.

He also founded Rand's Center for Middle Eastern Studies.

According a bibliography issued by FATHOM.com, an online study center, Khalilzad helped shape the [former US president George] Bush administration's regional defense strategy for the post-Cold War era and guided the drafting of the Defense Department's report titled Conduct of the Persian Gulf War - Albawaba.com
