The British Ministry of Defense on Monday confirmed an "incident" in Basra in which a British soldier was killed.

The death is believed to have occurred after an Army Land Rover was attacked by a bomb. A spokeswoman in Basra confirmed there were a number of casualties following an explosion.

"At 8.25 this morning a UK convoy was involved in an explosion," the spokeswoman said. "Unfortunately, casualties have been incurred."

Meanwhile, gunmen in Iraq have threatened to behead a kidnapped US Marine unless prisoners held by occupation forces are released.

Video footage on Arabic TV has shown a blindfolded man in a camouflage uniform and an apparent Marine Corps identity card naming him as Wassef Ali Hassoun.

The US military has confirmed that a Marine has been missing since last Monday.

A spokesman said the Marine, who was of Lebanese descent, belonged to the First Marine Expeditionary Force and had been missing since June 21. (Albawaba.com)
