The British adventurer, Mark Evans, will launch his 17ft kayak into the waters of the Musandam as he begins his 1,700 journey around the coastline of Oman to the Yemeni border in a bid to raise money and awareness for the National Association for Cancer Awareness.

Set up by Ms Yuthar Al-Rawahy, herself a three-times survivor of cancer, the National Association for Cancer Awareness aims to provide education about cancer and work for its successful treatment through early diagnosis and intervention.

Evans hopes that his journey will raise enough money, 200,000 Omani Riyals, to buy a mobile clinic which will bring life saving facilities for early diagnosis and education to the remoter parts of Oman. In the future it is hoped the vehicle will also be used for screening. “The concept of self-examination and early presentation is the key to quick diagnosis and proper, timely intervention”, said Ms Al-Rawahy.  “We are extremely grateful for Mark’s efforts in organising this incredible expedition and helping raise awareness of this important issue.”

Sponsored by Norwich Union and Land Rover & Mohsin Haider Darwish LLC, Evans’ Around Oman expedition will enable him to experience the majesty and beauty of the Omani coast as he paddles his kayak between 30–40 kms a day.  He will be met at regular intervals by the support team, John and Chris Smith, who will carry additional supplies and communication equipment in their specially adapted Land Rover.

“Oman is one of the most beautiful countries in the world,” said Evans, “and I can’t wait to start my journey and to experience this beauty each day.  It is a great privilege to be involved with the National Association for Cancer Awareness and help them generate understanding about, what is increasingly, a very curable disease.”
