In the wake of the 3rd International Conference on Child Health (and the 1st International Paediatric Endocrinology Conference, leading healthcare product provider Braun announced its support of the event in order to raise awareness of the dangers of child fever. Braun’s support of the event stems from its pioneering product the ThermoScan IRT 4000, a thermometer designed to measure children’s temperature comfortably through the ear, without the use of the potentially dangerous compound mercury as in traditional thermometers. It is anticipated that over 1000 medical professionals including paediatricians, general practitioners and pharmacists, will attend the conference, which will be held at the Hilton Hotel, Jeddah and will run from the 19th to the 23rd of November.
Braun Business Manager for the Arabian Peninsula, Ms. Salma Massoud, commented: “Child health is an issue which Braun takes very seriously. As a manufacturer of healthcare products, our first priority is the safety and well being of the consumer. We feel that supporting the Child Health conference will help raise awareness of child fever as a key issue in long term health, and give practitioners access to technology which could make their diagnosis and treatment more efficient.”
Braun had trained staff on hand at the conference to demonstrate how the technique of measuring temperature through the ear with the single-click system of the IRT 4000 is more comfortable and indeed safer for the patient. Following the EU ban on mercury-containing products introduced in September of this year, Braun is leading a campaign to initiate the same legislation throughout the Middle East with its ThermoScan IRT 4000. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is already ahead of the rest of the region, with the Ministry of Health initiating a ban throughout the Kingdom on beauty and skin products that contain the chemical. The United States has held a ban on mercury-containing products since 1998, however apart from KSA they continue to be sold throughout the Gulf and Middle East region.
Braun, global manufacturer of a wide range of healthcare products, and a leading proponent in the banning of mercury-based products, has long been leading the way with infrared technology (IRT), not least with its ThermoScan thermometer - already the preferred choice of many medical practitioners. This product is not only completely safe to use, but also comfortable and instant, with a single click to the ear, making it particularly suitable for young children. Additionally, compared with other methods, which can show an inaccuracy of a few degrees, infrared is by far the most accurate way to measure body temperature, measuring the infrared heat generated by the eardrum and surrounding tissues.
