British Prime Minister Tony Blair has said that the events of Sept. 11 have opened opportunities that must be grasped to forge better relations with such countries as Iran and Syria.
Following the attacks in the US, Blair said that the world needed to work to develop inter-faith understanding, Iran’s official news agency (IRNA) reported.
The British prime minister used his traditional annual speech on foreign policy at the Lord Mayor's Banquet in London Monday night to suggest that the cooperation of Iran and Syria should be sought to resolve the Middle East conflict.
"We should offer Syria, Iran and other nations in the same position a new relationship if they will work with us to end violence and promote a solution that is just for both Palestinians and Israelis.
“And if they will join the international consensus on weapons of mass destruction," he added.
"There can be a new beginning to their relations with the West. The opening is their now, I hope they will take it," Blair said in his speech.
Iran and Syria back Lebanon’s Hizbollah and Palestinian resistance movements, which the West and US claim are terrorist organizations.
