The Egyptian Parliament is witnessing violent quarrels following the attempts of several lawmakers to pass constitutional amendments giving wives the right to sue their husbands for adultery, the London-based daily Al Sharq Al Awsat said.
The lawmakers advocating equal rights have insisted on the demand, which upon approval by the Higher Constitutional Court will spur Parliament to amend the Penal Code, and prompt the inclusion of new clauses giving Egyptian wives the right to sue cheating spouses.
The idea is apparently based on the time-tested principle of “an eye for an eye,” said Al Sharq Al Awsat.
The daily said that “the 11 female members of the Egyptian Parliament rushed for the formation of a women’s lobby to draft a bill giving wives the right to sue their husbands for misconduct, and pass amendments…to punish the cheating husband the same way the wife is punished for misconduct.”
The female MPs reiterated their confidence in the ruling of the Higher Constitutional Court, saying this prompted them to prepare the bill, which will be presented to the upcoming parliamentary session this year - Albawaba.com
