Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid and Sudanese President Omar Bashir voiced their concern over unilaterally imposed sanctions which lead to more poverty and suffering of innocent citizens, said a final communiqué following talks between the two leaders in Khartoum.

Both leaders called on the international community to lift the embargoes imposed on Iraq, Sudan and Libya, said the statement, quoted by Al Rai Al Aam daily.

Wahid arrived in Khartoum Wednesday on a two-day state visit for talks on strengthening bilateral ties and discussing the latest developments in the Middle East region.

“The two countries stressed the necessity to reinforce the potentials of the developing countries to overcome the negative impact of globalization,” the statement added.

Wahid, who arrived in Khartoum from Nigeria on a several-nation tour, was greeted at the airport by Bashir.

Both leaders also condemned the Israeli aggression against the Palestinians and pledged continuous support for the Palestinian people in its pursuit of an independent state, with Jerusalem as its capital, said the statement.

The paper said, meanwhile, that both parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up a joint ministerial committee for bilateral cooperation.

Sudan “is looking forward to full strategic partnership with Indonesia,” Bashir said.

Wahid visited Yemen, UAE, Egypt and Nigeria.

He is due to arrive Saudi Arabia for talks with King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz. The President is also due to perform Hajj – Albawaba.com
