A new Bahraini plan has been drawn up to ensure the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR), including computer software, an official said Wednesday.

He added that a special panel had been formed to launch an awareness campaign targeting shopowners and computer users, reported the Gulf Daily News.

“The aim is to enhance their commitment to the rules and regulations that govern intellectual property rights and persuade them to stop using pirated products,” he said.

Directorate officials have paid field visits to several Bahrain companies to examine their commitment to IPR.

The official said that although many companies were operating in line with the law, others were not. They had been sent letters urging them to legalize their situation, comply with the regulations, and apply for original licenses.

The same source said no computers had been confiscated in the raids.

He added that it was vital that companies follow the law, since Bahrain’s reputation as a commercial and investment hub had to be safeguarded – Albawaba.com
