Bahrain’s campaign to introduce democratic and constitutional reforms took a major step forward on Wednesday when the committee charged with activating the National Action Charter convened for the first time, reported the Gulf News, citing the country’s Crown Prince.
The committee, chaired by Crown Prince, Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, drew up a list of the most vital issues to be discussed in the months ahead, said the paper.
They include drawing up a law to create a constitutional court and set up courts for administrative and finance purposes.
“Other important items to be discussed will be a societies and clubs law, a press and publication law, a general tenders law and a civil service law,” he was quoted as saying.
The committee will also discuss laws dealing with the abolition of monopolies and the use of capital, in addition to legislation governing citizenship and passports, labor unions, women’s rights, organization of the judiciary, guarantees of the non-exploitation of the judiciary and an orphanage law.
The committee will also explore the unemployment issue and try to find ways of providing job opportunities for citizens, the CP was quoted as saying.
The Crown Prince urged committee members to spread awareness of the proposed reforms to the public.
He said they should prepare citizens to play an active role in Bahrain’s democratic development and encourage them to assume their responsibilities.
The committee, which selected Jamal Fakhro as secretary, was also encouraged by the Crown Prince to make use of the expertise of citizens by appointing them to sub-committees at a later date – Albawaba.com
