Syria on Monday asked fellow non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council Pakistan to help block any initiative that would help the United States attack Iraq.
President Bashar al-Assad urged his Pakistani peer Pervez Musharraf "to stand against any initiative or effort that would give the United States an excuse to launch an aggression against Iraq," the official Syrian news agency (SANA) said.
Assad, who spoke to Musharraf by telephone, was apparently referring to a fresh U.N. resolution on Iraq that the United States and Britain are trying to secure. SANA said the two leaders agreed to continue their consultations.
Meanwhile, the British Foreign Office added Syria Monday to a growing list of Middle East states for UK nationals not
to travel to.
"Because of the increasing regional tension we advise you not to make any non-essential travel including holiday travel," it warned British nationals. Those already in Syria were advised to maintain a "high level of vigilance and to consider whether their presence and that of dependents is essential." (Albawaba.com)
