The Arab League on Sunday accused Israel of trying to plunge the Middle East region into a fresh cycle of violence by trying to kill Hamas spiritual leader, Sheikh Ahmad Yassin.

Israel is "again plunging the region into a cycle of violence," said Hisham Yussef, aide to Arab League Secretary General Amr Mussa.

The attack against Yassin in Gaza on Saturday "opens the door wide for new waves of violence and tension which are difficult to contain," he added.

"It's a new blow to efforts aimed at achieving peace and provides clear evidence of Israel's lack of commitment to calming down the situation," Yussef said, according to AFP

The Arab League figure asked the US and the other members of the "quartet" - the EU, Russia and the UN - to intervene to stop the escalating violence. (Albawaba.com)
