Seventy Arab intellectuals, media figures and politicians arrived Sunday in Cairo to participate in a conference organized by the Arab League “to avoid a clash of civilizations between the West and Islam following the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States,” reports said.

The Cairo-based Arab League is following calls by leaders in Washington, London, the UN, Tehran, Cairo and other capitals to work for a dialogue among civilizations, said AFP.

The two-day meeting will also tackle 30 research papers presented by Arab intellectuals taking part in this gathering.

The conference will contain a lecture on “ways of confronting the Western smear campaigns against Arabs and Muslims” in the wake of the terrorist attacks on US, said Kuwait’s official news agency (KUNA).

Secretary General of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters in Kuwait Mohammad Al Rumaihi was quoted by KUNA as saying that a preparatory committee for the conference had met to prepare a working paper as a framework for the conference's deliberations.

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa was quoted as saying the conference would set up a clearly defined program to confront campaigns against Arabs and Muslims by establishing an executive mechanism – Albawaba.com
